Fresh lime dining area

a5b040e28250ddf8a595daf6cf8151baI really like this take on the classic pairing of Eames DSW chairs and a Saarinen Tulip Table.  Found on Pinterest, I really like the lime feature wall matching the chairs, and the large vase of fresh tulips.

Chintzy Pink Nursery

image003And I mean chintzy in the best way. This image appeared in my inbox thanks to Jennifer, who said ‘I would LOVEEEEEE to have a nursery like that for my little girl’. And wow, it was a challenge! This one is a bit DIY-heavy, as having a bright pink nursery has fallen out of fashion over the last, maybe 20 years? But for the right home, this could look wonderful even in 2013- and can be done for much cheaper than it looks.

For the first two DIY’s, you’ll need some floral cotton fabric like ‘Rose Floral’ from FabricBuy.

1 Make a quilted baby blanket- like this beginners tutorial from Pretty Prudent.

2 Buy a floor standing lamp such as ‘Bailey’ for £69 from Made. Replace the fabric on the lampshade:Trim with mini pink pom-poms from Sew Sweet.

3 Using Dylon machine dye in powder pink, dye the loose cover on an ‘Ektorp’ armchair (£175) and ‘Kompisar’ cot bumper pad (£10) both from Ikea.

4 Make a cot valance in pink cotton fabric following this tutorial from 413 Sparrow Lane.

5 Age new childrens furniture like this table and chair set for £39.99 from Argos by following Kirsty Allsopp’s tutorial to paint and distress furniture. Emulsion paint in ‘Oak Leaf’ from Wilkinsons will add a contrast to all that pink!

The ‘How I Met Your Mother’ Apartment

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER

Something a little different for Interior Looks- the first post using a room in a TV show.  And what could be better than Marshall and Lily’s apartment in How I Met Your Mother? If you watch the show, you’ll know that this is their first home together with Ted, following graduation when they all moved to New York- so it makes me think of how decoration is usually odds and ends picked up cheaply or free when furnishing your first house out of necessity rather than because of aesthetics.

The yellow, white and brown/red grid cushion reminds me of crocheted cushions like these. You could make something that looks similar choosing a dark red/brown wool for the centre, yellow for the next three rows, and white for the outer edge.

A Writer’s Writing Room

Home Office

Kyle from Beyond the Fiction told me that this would be his perfect writing room when he emailed this image. Now, built in shelving can be hella expensive, but you could also achieve the look by using Ikea Billy bookcases and make them look like built-ins. But failing that, here’s some ideas…

InteriorLooksDIY111 The internet is great for finding things like copyright free images, such as this fleur de lis symbol. It could be used as the template to do some lino printing on a simple cotton roman blind like this one for £12.99 from Argos. Get some lino, a lino cutter, roller, ink and follow a tutorial like this:

2 Keep your stationary looking slick with a wooden pencil box for £10.49. Varnish in a dark mahogany gloss.

3 Replace drawer and cupboard door knobs with with chrome ones like these from B&Q which are £9.98 for a pack of six.

FIND

Keep an eye out at Charity shops, carboot sales, eBayGumtree & your local paper. Takes a bit of time but there are bargains to be baggedInteriorLooksFIND11A quick search on my local Gumtree and eBay and I found second hand carver chairs for £10-£30. You’re likely to pick these up in antique centres too. You may need to clean them up, restain the wood with a dark mahogany wood dye like this, and reupholster the seat using a heavy fabric, but it’ll be worth the effort, and tonnes cheaper than a new one.

Eclectic, bright and bohemian living room

Boho-Chic-Living-Room-Ideal-Home-HousetohomeI found this photo of a boho chic living room on the excellent House to Home website, which is teaming with ideas and moodboards. I love that if you take away the pops of primary colours you’re left with plain white walls and beige sofas- which are usually associated with pretty boring interiors. Add some fresh flowers and family photos to the list below to achieve a delightfully relaxing and fun space.

The ‘Clasique Collection’ bevelled edge frames from £4.99 and the ‘Regency’ photo frames from £1.99 at Dunelm are asking to be painted. Cheap tester pots in bright colours are great, and you can paint a dado rail around the room to match. I found the ‘Colours’ collection at B&Q perfect, especially ‘Malibu Beach’ and ‘Electric Yellow’ at £1.10 each.

Make an array of simple cushions using ‘Fast Women Lazy Stripe’ red stripe and ‘Marmalade Stripe’ in lemon from Fabricbuy.

Also from Fabricbuy, Red petite dot fabric, teamed with Mini pom pom trim in yellow, will look awesome. Use in the same way as piping, it’s just 90p per yard from Sew Sweet. Find some excellent Youtube videos in this post.

1 Who knew you couldn’t dye faux fur the conventional way- or buy a yellow fur cushion anywhere! To DIY you could get a cheap faux fur cushion like this one for £8 from Matalan, and dye using yellow acrylic paint from Hobbycraft for £5.79. I found some videos on YouTube showing how to do it:

2 Buy a plain flat woven rug like this blue one for £50 from Habitat, and some fabric ink such as Permaset (I used to use this for screenprinting). The pattern comes from a cheap rubber doormat like this for £4.99 from Dunelm. Make your own Morrocan style print rug following this tutorial on Apartment Therapy.

Cool Grey Living Room

01-hbx-metallic-cowhide-rug-giesen-0713-lgnI found this image in Pinterest. It’s on the House Beautiful website– which is a magazine I remember my Mum always buying at the supermarket. I love the different shades of grey in the seating- so good to get away from the standard three piece suite everyone is so used to.
