eebf9559458ed8d27145ebe999acf076I love the use of pink and coral teamed with grey and blue in this cosy and calm living room. I’ve been piecing together this look for a few weeks now following a good browse on Pinterest.

I am always amazed where this blog takes me- and extreme knitting is no exception. You can buy super chunky knitted blankets from sellers like Loopy Mango (who’s Etsy shop is incredible) and Lucy Hanks. But £170-£350 is a lot to spend on a throw, and after a bit of research I’ve discovered that extreme knitting (knitting using oversized knitting needles with super thick yarn) is supposedly easy AND quick to whip up something in an evening. I’m sold!

Textile Artist Rachel John is considered a bit of an expert on this, and you can get a pair of needles from her Amazon shop for £19.99, as well as jersey Hooplayarn which is a by-product of the textile industry. If you’re looking to emulate that soft and chunky blanket, knit a few strands of Sirdar Big Softie in ‘Blancmange’ at a time using your super-sized needles.

Theres a great post on ‘In My Own Style’ showing how to transform furniture using black varnish. I love that you would be able to use Minwax or cheaper Wilko’s varnish to change cheap Ikea bedside tables into sleek side tables.

Brass against blue works great, and if your don’t have grandparents willing to lend you an animal from their brass collection (mine have quite a selection!), you can pick up animals and objects for well under £10 each from eBay and Gumtree. As they’re quite heavy it might be something to keep an eye out for them at car boot sales or in charity shops so you don’t end up paying loads for postage.

And while you’re at the car boot, keep an eye out for a bench which can be repurposed as as a coffee table. Don’t worry about the condition as you can varnish it to match the side tables.

Monica’s Apartment from Friends

Friends-TV_Show-Monica_Apartment_Set-01clip_image0025_thumbSo to follow on from my first TV post where I showed you how to get the look of Marshall and Lily’s apartment in ‘How I Met Your Mother’, I thought I’d get a little nostalgic looking at Monica’s apartment in everyone’s favourite sitcom ‘Friends’. I actually remember the first time I watched an episode- I was eleven years old and my best friend had the pilot episode on VHS- which we watched repeatedly. Following that I used to run home from Guides every Friday night to watch it on channel 4 at 9pm.

InteriorLooksDIY14The picture frame around the peephole in the apartment door is probably one of the most recognisable part of the entire set. There are so many tutorials and replicas available on the web, but this tutorial on Instructables was by far the best I found- and it looks like it’d be loads of fun to make too.

Create velvet patchwork cushions like the ones on the sofa following tutorials like this one on Make it and Mend it. You can buy bundles of velvet fabric from Amazon or your local fabric shop.

Californian Cottage Living Room

3b0a3d9050e97a1b49206eabf92ec734Apart from the bright, airiness, my main draw to this room found on Pinterest was the books on the coffee table- a couple of which I have owned for many years and used as part of my dissertation in my final year of University.

1 My go-to easy cushion cover tutorial, in aqua dot fabric:

2 The pale green lamp really compliments the rest of the colour scheme and stops it from being too match-y. Plasti-kote do a spray paint suitable for all materials, the pistachio would completely change the look of a plain glass table lamp like ‘Ijusas’ from Ikea

3 Just like the home-owner in the photo, roller blinds can be hand made in large grey chevron fabric following a tutorial like this on on DesignSponge

Bright and Dotty Living Room

05d84b745448174ab483e986847a2669I stumbled on this image browsing colourful living rooms on Pinterest and immediately thought ‘I want that in my house- but there’s no way I’ll be able to do a blog post on it’. I knew it’d be tricky to find items to replicate this look, but a few weeks later, I thought I’d give it a go. The room was put together by stylist Sally Conran, and I am now a huge fan of her work.

1 ‘Tivoli’ dining armchair. £179 Wayfair. To make this more of an occasional chair, you could trim a few inches off the legs to make it a little more relaxed. I couldn’t find any specific tutorials, but this forum thread will give some ideas of where to start.

InteriorLooks17DIY1 I can’t tell you how much I’d like to give this a go- I really love ditzy dot prints rather than the uniformed polka dot. There are plenty of tutorials online showing how to lino print your own wallpaper, like this one:

I’ve put together this template for a 40x30cm piece of lino, but it would be good to resize the image to within the dimensions of lining paper (for example, paper 60cm in width, would fit two 30cm width prints side by side, with nothing being cut off).

dots lino templateLino printing tools and inks can be purchased from loads of places, including Turners Art Shop.

2 There’s a few cushions to make for this- including the seat cushion for the occasional chair. You can pick up a tick piece of foam from markets and fabric shops for around £10, I love this easy seat cover tutorial with minimal sewing. If I were making one, I’d use ‘Millwood Leaf’ fabric from Laura Ashley.

Sew simple envelope scatter cushions in fabrics which match the colour scheme- such as in red and white geometric print, and soft blue and yellow brushed cotton, both sourced through Fabric Buy.

3 Finally, transform cheap bright cotton fabric, some cheap iron on transfers and some mini pom pom trim into bright, round cushions. You could even give your embroidery skills as go by embellishing with leaves

The ‘How I Met Your Mother’ Apartment

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER

Something a little different for Interior Looks- the first post using a room in a TV show.  And what could be better than Marshall and Lily’s apartment in How I Met Your Mother? If you watch the show, you’ll know that this is their first home together with Ted, following graduation when they all moved to New York- so it makes me think of how decoration is usually odds and ends picked up cheaply or free when furnishing your first house out of necessity rather than because of aesthetics.

The yellow, white and brown/red grid cushion reminds me of crocheted cushions like these. You could make something that looks similar choosing a dark red/brown wool for the centre, yellow for the next three rows, and white for the outer edge.

How to crochet a granny square:

Make those granny squares into a cushion cover following this tutorial on Deer Little Fawn

Eclectic, bright and bohemian living room

Boho-Chic-Living-Room-Ideal-Home-HousetohomeI found this photo of a boho chic living room on the excellent House to Home website, which is teaming with ideas and moodboards. I love that if you take away the pops of primary colours you’re left with plain white walls and beige sofas- which are usually associated with pretty boring interiors. Add some fresh flowers and family photos to the list below to achieve a delightfully relaxing and fun space.

The ‘Clasique Collection’ bevelled edge frames from £4.99 and the ‘Regency’ photo frames from £1.99 at Dunelm are asking to be painted. Cheap tester pots in bright colours are great, and you can paint a dado rail around the room to match. I found the ‘Colours’ collection at B&Q perfect, especially ‘Malibu Beach’ and ‘Electric Yellow’ at £1.10 each.

Make an array of simple cushions using ‘Fast Women Lazy Stripe’ red stripe and ‘Marmalade Stripe’ in lemon from Fabricbuy.

Also from Fabricbuy, Red petite dot fabric, teamed with Mini pom pom trim in yellow, will look awesome. Use in the same way as piping, it’s just 90p per yard from Sew Sweet. Find some excellent Youtube videos in this post.
